Bloomsburg Baseball Drops Pair to Mansfield

MANSFIELD--The playoff hopes for the Bloomsburg University baseball team took a hit on Friday after the Huskies dropped a pair of games to Mansfield by scores of 5-4 and 10-8.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning of the opener, the Huskies got a two-run homer from Matt Allen (DuBoistown/South Williamsport) grab a 2-1 lead. The Huskies made it 3-1 in the fifth when Anthony Forman (Richboro/Council Rock South) singled, stole second and scored on a single by Preston Hitchcock (Laceyville/Wyalusing). Mansfield tied the score with a pair of runs in the bottom fifth before the Huskies regained the lead in the seventh.

In the seventh, Allen singled in Tony Donofry (Newtown/Council Rock North) to put the Huskies on top 4-3. Mansfield, though, tied the score with a two-out rally and then won the game in the eighth on a one-out, bases loaded single.

Allen finished the day 2-3 with three RBI, while Hitchock was 2-5 with an RBI.

In game two Bloomsburg trailed 2-0 heading into the third when the Huskies picked up two runs to tie the game. Chris Tressler (Lewistown/Lewistown) had an RBI single with the other run scoring on a wild-pitch. After the Mountaineers scored four times in the bottom of the third, the Huskies got single runs back in the fourth and fifth innings. Forman had a sacrifice fly in the fourth, while Kevin Ward (Upper Darby/Monsignor Bonner) hit a solo homer in the fifth.

Mansfield came back with four more runs in the home fifth to lead 10-4 before the Huskies rallied once more. Bloomsburg got four runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 10-8 game. Tressler had a two-run double in the inning, while Forman drove in a run with double and Donofry had an RBI single.

The Huskies did get the tying run to the plate with one out, but Mansfield turned a double play to end the game.

Forman finished 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Tressler was 2-4 with three RBI.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at Bloomsburg starting at 1 p.m.
